Cell therapy is a medical treatment that involves introducing living, functional cells into a patient's body to replace, repair, or regenerate damaged tissue and restore normal biological function.
In practice, cell therapy utilizes a variety of cell types, depending on the targeted disease. These cells can be autologous, meaning they are harvested from the patient's own body, or allogeneic, meaning they are sourced from a healthy donor. The most commonly utilized cells include hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, immune cells (such as T cells), and specialized somatic cells like chondrocytes (cartilage cells) or neurons. Once harvested, these cells are often cultivated, multiplied, or genetically modified in a laboratory setting before being administered to the patient via intravenous infusion, direct injection, or surgical implantation.
